Restoran Sungai Jelok @ Kajang, Selangor

I was visiting a schoolmate in Kajang this evening and that was how I was introduced to this place. I was informed that this Chinese restaurant is one that is quite famous among the locals and one that has been around for decades now.

The Restaurant In Sungai Jelok Area

Indoor & Outdoor Seating Available
Restoran Sungai Jelok is located along Jalan Sungai Jelok, Kajang and it is hard to miss as it's located right by the road. Such a huge set up that it occupies an entire lot with both indoor and outdoor seating areas. Seeing all this and the crowd this evening, it was definitely convincing that the food would be pretty good here. Food options were very much similar to any other Chinese seafood restaurants. There wasn't a menu available hence we ordered based on our preferences. Maybe they might have been one inside but since we had already known what we wanted to have, none of us insisted on seeing one.

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 8.00
Looking at the crowd this evening, I was expecting the dishes to arrive at least 60 minutes from the time of order but to my surprise, it came in half of that time. Coming to their dishes, the first one to arrive was Kangkung Belacan. Portions were good, the veggies were fresh and they were quite generous with the shrimp paste. However, my only complaint would be that it was a tad too oily. Taste wise, it was good and I would rate this at 7/10.

Cuttlefish with Salted Eggs @ RM 16.00
Cuttlefish with salted eggs were very good. I was very impressed with this dish. The squid was fried to a golden brown perfection and was topped with a generous batter of salted eggs. This dish would be one that I would recommend here. As far as the rating goes, I would give it 9/10.

Steamed Fish with Chilli Paste @ RM 31.00
Steamed Fish with Chilli Paste (Cheong Cheng) was very much the southern style of preparation. In fact, in northern Peninsular Malaysia, this dish is prepared in similar fashion. Compared to the one that we get in the central region, this one was sweeter, was a little more coarse and had lard in it. The overall texture of the shrimp paste is a little dry as well. Differences in style of preparation aside, it did taste good and different from the norms for me. I would rate this at 7/10.

Kam Heong Clams @ RM 16.00
Their Kam Heong Clams was a fantastic dish. Large clams were used and as you can see, there was an overload of sauces. Tasted extremely good and this for sure is another dish that I would recommend here. As for me, this deserves a perfect 10/10.

The Bill For The Day
The food at this restaurant was surely good. Out of the four dishes that we had, their Kam Heong Clams and Salted Egg Squid were two dishes that stood out. Price wise, it isn't small town pricing but it was worth it. Definitely a good Chinese Restaurant to visit in Kajang.
