Dee' Lizz Corner @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Dee' Lizz Corner is literally tucked in one corner of town in Tanjung Malim, Perak. I do not think that this is a new restaurant, it should have been around for at least a year plus now. It's just that I hardly come to this side of town. This restaurant is located in Taman Malim along Jalan Malim 2, in fact it's right at the very end of Jalan Malim 2 which is parallel to the Old Slim Road, a road that not many people use these days. As a matter of fact, that entire stretch is rather spooky at nights. It was just that I came here to meet a friend who lives in this residential garden and since it was rather late, I had my dinner at this restaurant.

A Simple Set Up
Despite being in a remote area, this restaurant seems to be famous among the people living in this part of town. It was a rather late night and even then, there were quite a number of tables that were occupied and they were mostly seated outdoors. The above photograph merely shows the indoor dining area where I was seated. It was a little dark to take photographs outside and that was the reason I sat indoors. Otherwise, it would have been just awesome sitting outdoors as this restaurant is located close to a stream and some secondary forest and that being the case, the weather is mostly cool and nice over there.

The menu was a rather standard one, the same dishes that you get at all if not most similar restaurants. The prices however seemed a little lower but again, I'll have to wait for the dishes to see the portions to justify this. The guy taking the orders was a rather chatty chap. He kept on asking a lot of questions as if it was a job interview. Anyway, I know that he was just trying to be friendly and I just went along. So, the ordering process that should have been five minutes got dragged to around fifteen minutes. When it was over, I was sincearly thankful that it was over. 

Kailan Ikan Masin @ RM 3.50
Cooking did take a little longer but it was bearable and my dishes were served in about 20 minutes from the time of order, and that is from the time the waiter had left my table. Their Kailan Ikan Masin was decent. I loved the taste aspect but disliked the quality of veggies used. The dish tasted really good, they didn't skimp on the ingredients and that's a plus point. On the other hand, the Kailan leaves seemed not fresh and most of it in the dish were the stem itself. This I feel they should improve. Overall, I would give this a 7/10. 

Telur Dadar @ RM 1.50
The Telur Dadar wasn't impressive. It was soaked in oil and the amount of onions used weren't much. Based on the quality, I felt that RM 1.50 is a little too much for this. Some places in town charge RM 1.00 for the same and these guy's should just charge the same. I would give this a 5/10. 

Ayam Masak Pedas @ RM 5.00
There are a number of things that I want to say about this dish. Firstly, the price. For the quantity of chicken bits given, RM 5.00 is a little too much. If you look at the dish, it's mostly the sauces that's covering the entire dish. On the other hand, if I were to comment taste wise, this is the best Ayam Masak Pedas that I have tasted in Tanjung Malim. It was so deliciously spicy and I enjoyed every bit of it despite the fact that I was profusely sweating. Yes, this was just fantastic and because of the taste, I am willing to depart with RM 5.00 . This deserves a 10/10 and that's solely based on the taste of the dish. 

Cendawan Goreng @ RM 3.50
Cendawan Goreng was quite a disappointing dish. The mushrooms were all fine, in fact they were fresh and chewy. However, the base sauce was rather bland. Supposedly, this is stir friend with Sambal Hijau but the cook had used too much water and diluted the taste and that resulted in a dish that ended up being bland and tasteless. A big no to this dish and I would give it a 3/10. 

To sum up my dining experience tonight, the only dish that I had enjoyed was the Ayam Masak Pedas. The rest that I had tried were just not up to the mark. I doubt that I would be returning again.

Restoran Fu Man @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Besides Ga Onn Restaurant and Garden Seafood, Restoran Fu Man is another favourite restaurant among the locals in Tanjung Malim, Perak. This restaurant is located in Taman Universiti which is along the old state road heading towards Kuala Lumpur. It's been a while since we came here. If I am not mistaken, the last time I was here was in June this year. Yes, that long it has been and for a change, we decided to do lunch here today. Actually, the local Chinese prefer this restaurant more than Ga Onn and as such, the place is full house most of the time. Sometimes, you'd have to make prior reservations to get a table. It was pass 2 pm when we arrived and even then, we had to wait for 10 minutes before having gotten ourselves a table. To add to this, they also get quite a number of tourist buses dropping by and that should give you an indication as to how good their business is. Food is good here, no doubt about it and they have a number of signature dishes as well which are loved by many. As for today, we won't be doing any one of those signature dishes as those would require a larger number of people and here we are just the four of us. So, just some usual dishes that we love at this restaurant. The service here is very quick and all their staffs move around so quickly attending to customers needs. I guess they are so used to running full house most of the time.

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 8.00
Kangkung Belacan is a staple dish that we have to order every time we eat out at a Chinese restaurant. Somehow, I didn't quite like the preparation here and felt that the one that we get at Ga Onn Restaurant, is far superior.  The reason, was the lack of belacan and dried shrimps. Otherwise, it was decent. I would give this a 6/10 only. 

Sour Tofu & Tomato Soup @ RM 15.00
This dish was prepared using pickled vegetables, tofu and tomatoes. The soup itself was quite sour in taste, mainly contributed by the pickled veggies but I loved it. The portion was huge and the price seemed reasonable. I would give this a 8/10. 

Kam Heong Clams @ RM 20.00
The Kam Heong Style Clams were excellent. The clams were huge, not the small sized ones that are commonly found in restaurants and the sauce was divine. It was so good that we literally wiped the plate clean. Generous usage of belacan and it came with lots of dried shrimps. I would rate this at 10/10.

Steamed Tilapia Fish with Ginger @ RM 26.00
Steamed Tilapia Fish with ginger. This is one of the dishes that I love here. It's just amazing how they prepare them without skimping on the ingredients. Just see the amount of ginger used. The fish was steamed and topped with ginger and bird eye chili's. The generous topping of ginger seeped in well into the fish meat and that gave it an all round taste. Super good it was and for this style of preparation, these guys are the best in town. It would be a shame if I rate this anything less than a perfect 10/10. 

Butter Prawns @ RM 22.00
Another good dish here is their Butter Prawns. Reasonably large prawns were used for this dish. The prawns were delicious and the flesh was still sweet in taste. . Another good preparation and I would rate this 9/10. 

Ma Po Tofu @ RM 15.00
Their Ma Po Tofu was nice but I felt that it could have been better. This should have been a spicy dish since it originates from the Szechuan province. Here, it tasted quite sweet and that wasn't to my liking. Nevertheless, it was still a decent dish and I would give this a 7/10. 

With an exception to the Kangkung Belacan, the rest of the dishes were just awesome. Overall a good lunch and my tummy was happy. Reasonable prices, good food and excellent customer service. Definitely a place that I would recommend.

Gerai Jagung Bakar Rizal @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

All this while, we the people of Tanjung Malim, Perak are only used to getting corn on Saturdays at the night market and this is a practice that has been going on for more than a decade now. The good news is that you can now get them daily and that too the American Sweet Corns!

This stall is located along the state road heading towards Ipoh just opposite MSV Auto and Kg. Berop. A brightly lit up stall that is hard to miss and beside them, there's another stall selling burgers. The variety that we get at the Saturday Night Market is the Taiwanese Sweet Corn and this one is the American Sweet Corn, a huge difference in taste and texture. In fact, Rizal the proprietor, offered me to taste a raw corn and yes, it was so sweet and almost edible just like that. 

Grilled Corn @ RM 2.50 each

The grilled corns are priced at RM 2.50 each. The same variety would be priced at around RM 3.00 each in Kuala Lumpur and this is based on my own experience. This variety of corn also takes a much shorter time to be grilled and for those who do not prefer the grilled version, you could also go for the steamed one. Both are priced at RM 2.50 each. 

Nasi Lemak @ RM 1.50 per packet

Besides the grilled corn, they also sell prepacked Nasi Lemak that is priced at RM 1.50 each. The specialty here is the Quails Eggs Nasi Lemak. Unfortunately, that was not available for me to try this evening and so I had to settle for the usual one that comes with a piece of fried egg. 

Spicy and fragrant Nasi Lemak
Based on the many Nasi Lemak Bungkus that I have tried in town, this one was the best among the lot. The rice was extremely fragrant and it was so good to eat on it's own. The Sambal was extra spicy and went so well with the rice. For those who can't really take spicy food, then this would not be for you. When I meant spicy, I meant really spicy and being a spicy food lover, this was just perfect for me. For the price, I would say that the amount of rice was more then the usual. However, I felt that the sambal was a little less. Maybe they had deliberately made it extremely spicy and reduced the volume thinking that people would have a little of it each time compared to the usual ones. Nevertheless, I would give this a 9/10. Both the rice and the sambal deserve the same ratings. A good one!

And the great news is that they open till 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays. I wonder if people do go out to buy corn at that hour but that's what they had informed me. So for all of you who are planning to stay up late to catch your favourite football match, here's something for you that you could be munching while watching your favourite teams in action.

Sam Chicken Rice Stall @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Who doesn't love a good plate of Chicken Rice. As far as I can remember, Chicken Rice has been a favourite of mine since my childhood days. Having come across this stall that had just commenced business about a week ago, I just had to give that place a try. Firstly, it was due to my curiosity as a foodie and secondly, it was all for the love of Chicken Rice.

Sam Chicken Rice stall is located inside Restoran Kar Kui which is right in the center of town. For those who aren't too sure where that it, this restaurant is located along Jalan Loke Yew, just beside the old Rex Cinema. Business commences at around 11 am daily and this goes on till he is sold out and that is usually between 2.30 pm to 3.00 pm. He doesn't seem like one that specialises in a particular type of meat as his offerings seemed quite basic to me. Anyway, I would never know precisely till I have tasted them. So I ordered a plate of rice and this was to go with some Roasted Chicken, Roasted Pork Belly and Char Siew. 

Yellow Rice
Business was surely good for this guy. People were queuing up to do takeaways and a handful of customers were dining in. Luckily I arrived a little late, almost towards his closing time and he was able to serve me quite swiftly. Coming back to his dishes, the rice that was served was the yellow rice. Good that he does this as I have come across some places that serve white rice which isn't quite right. The flavours were good, though I have tasted better. It was creamy for sure and that proved that he had used a decent amount of margarine but the gingery flavour was missing or perhaps a little too mild to be noticed. Nevertheless, a decent preparation it was and I would give this a 7/10. 

Char Siew
I found his Char Siew to be rather disappointing. Well, the real Char Siew has got a taste of it's own which comes from the meat itself and not the sauces. This one, when tasted on it's own, it was not able to give out any particular taste nor was it even sweet. Only the colour of the meat was pinkish. If not for the sauces, it would have been quite bland. Perhaps I should not expect much from a day to day stall but that's just me. Each food item should be how it's supposed to be and I personally think that it isn't wrong to expect it to be such. Anyway, it is what it is and I would give this preparation a 5/10. 

Roasted Chicken and Roasted Pork Belly
The Roasted Chicken and Roasted Pork Belly (Siew Yuk) were served in a separate plate. Good that this was done as I would not want the base sauces to mix with each other and spoil the taste. 

Roasted Chicken
His Roasted Chicken was nice, definitely better than the earlier BBQ Meat that I had tried. However, I still wasn't fully satisfied. The skin was crispy and good, that surely is all good. The meat however lacked flavours. If the marination had been perfect, than one would even get a very unique taste when chewing the bones and what more at the meat level. This one just didn't have that. It was nice, I am not denying that. It just wasn't as good as it should be. As for this Roasted Chicken, I'd give it a 6/10. 

Roasted Pork Belly
Compared to the three meat varieties that I had tasted today, this Roasted Pork Belly was the best. When I say 'best', I am not denoting that it was excellent. It was just better than the other two. The meat was crispy at the end and the middle body was juicy and tasty. This, I would give it a 7/10. 

Clear Soup with Preserved Vegetables
The clear soup came with preserved vegetables and that's a welcomed addition. It did taste nice, slightly different compared to the ones that we usually get. I would give this a 7/10. 

Chili Paste
Honestly, I don't think he makes his own chili paste as this one tasted just like those bottled ones that we get in the supermarkets. Just in case that he does make this on his own, then he surely has not mastered the art of making this and has got a long way to go. Unless, he's trying to skimp on the ingredients and make it a little watery. Whichever the reason it was, it surely wasn't to my liking and I'd only give this a 5/10. 

In summary, I find this place to be just okay. I'd probably return for his Siew Yuk and not the rest. This isn't because the rest of the items were bad. It's just that I could get better ones within a 1 minute walking distance from his stall.

Restoran Hannan Tomyam @ Hulu Bernam, Selangor

Restoran Hannan Tomyam is the latest Tomyam restaurant in Tanjung Malim, Perak. This restaurant is located in Taman Hulu Bernam, right beside the Shell station on the Selangor side of town. If I am not mistaken, it's been abount two months now since they opened.

Very Clean Restaurant

Beautifully Designed As Well
Unlike many of the Tomyam eateries, these guys have placed themselves in a proper restaurant. Just in front of the restaurant, there's a huge land space and so parking isn't a problem. There's a few things that I really liked about this restaurant. Firstly, it's the cleanliness, followed by the design and finally the bright lighting instead of the pinkish and blue dim lighting. As a result, this restaurant draws a lot of family crowd compared to the others that usually attracts singles and couples. I was here around 8 pm on a weekday and the crowd was very promising. At that hour, there were almost ten tables that were occupied. Luckily, they all came after me and so I got my food the first. If only I had been late, then I am sure that the waiting time would have been very long. They do not have a menu card and so I am not able to share the price list. However, as always, I would share the prices of the individual dishes that I had consumed. Just like any other Tomyam restaurant, this too was very much a family run business. A boy in his late teens was taking the orders as well as serving the dishes. His mother was the sole worker in the kitchen. That being said, it did take a little longer than usual for the dishes to arrive. For example, it would typically take around 10 to 15 minutes wait time for the dishes to arrive. Here, I had to wait close to 30 minutes. I wonder how long it would take for the 10th person that had arrived that day before he gets to enjoy his dinner. 

Sambal Belacan with Cucumber
After the long wait, the dishes were served. Firstly, let's look at their Sambal Belacan. This is a must have dish in most Malay restaurants and it is one that is provided on the house. The Sambal Belacan here was mildly spicy, a little tangy and overall had a good blend of ingredients. Personally, I would have prefered something more spicy but I guess this is what the majority would prefer. Based on my taste preferences, I would give this a 7/10. 

Kailan Ikan Masin @ RM 4.50
Generally this Kailan Ikan Masin dish is priced at RM 4.00 but it was fifty cents more at this restaurant. Still very much worth it as the portion size was double the usual. The veggies were fresh and I could get a very strong salt fish taste in the dish. Another good thing is that they did not overcook the Kailan as it was still crispy. Good stuff for sure and I would give this a 8/10. 

Telur Dadar @ RM 1.50
Finally, I came across a Telur Dadar that was non greasy. In most restaurants, this would come soaked in oil that is good to fry another two eggs. For once, this was exactly the way I would want it to be. The edges were thin and crispy and the center was filled with onions. Lovely it was and I would give this a 9/10. 

Ayam Masak Pedas @ RM 5.00
This Ayam Masak Pedas dish was really spicy, the kind of spicy that get's me profusely sweating and I loved it! For RM 5.00 , it was such a huge portion and they were surely generous with the chicken. For once, I did not have to look for the chicken that's usually hidden under the greens. The chicken bits were just the right size, it was rich in gravy and that went so well with  rice. I seriously would not mind having just this with white rice. That's how good it was. This definitely deserves a 10/10. 

Udang Goreng Tepung @ RM 6.00
I have had this Udang Goreng Tepung in a number of restaurants and not a single restaurant had used large prawns like this one. Each prawn was the size of my palm, coated in a crispy batter and deep fried. The prawns were fried just right, not overdone and were sweet in taste. The combination of the crispy batter and juicy prawns were just beautiful. This deserves a perfect 10/10. 

Overall, I am very happy with the meal here. The prices may seem to be slightly more but do note that the portions are huge, in fact they are almost double in size and that's definitely a plus point for customers. You spend less and it feeds more people. That's good value for the money spent. Besides that, the food tastes good, the ambiance is lovely and most importantly the restaurant is clean. Surely will be coming back for more.

Hot Pizza @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Craving for some pizza? Why not try something different instead of the usual chains. Hot Pizza is one of it's kind pizza that is located along Jalan U1, Taman Universiti, Tanjung Malim. Typically it is another franchise as well but they operate from a stall. I believe they have a number of stalls located throughout Malaysia and this one is the most recent one that has been opened. Calling themnselves Pizza Jalanan or Street Pizza, they have slowly started to build a good customer base here in Tanjung Malim.

Despite being a rainy day, there were so many customers that were waiting for their orders. Being just a stall, most people tend to do takeaways. However, there are some tables in the open if you wish to have it there. Since it was a rainy day, it was all takeaways. As far as the variety is concerned, they have six variety of pizzas and they are Mixed Pizza, Chicken Pizza, Beef Pizza, Seafood Pizza, Chicken Pepperoni Pizza and Beef Pepperoni Pizza and they come in three sizes; small, regular and family size. It's also great that they have listed the ingredients of each and every pizza on their menu. This is helpful for people like me who do not consume beef.

What impressed me further was their carton boxes. I thought they would typically have a very simple packaging but no, they had these lovely pizza cartons for each pizza size. That's really taking this street pizza to the next level. Practically, it was the entire family that was playing a role at this stall. The son was looking after the oven and yes, they actually had a gas oven there. The daughters were making the pizza's themselves, carefully placing the ingredients based on their training. And the best part was that hygiene was optimum. I have not seen such hygiene being practiced even in some of those famous pizza chains in Malaysia. Very impressive! The parents were handling the packaging and the cash. Typically that kept the entire family busy. Another thing that I had thought initially was that they would be using some frozen pizzas and no, each item was made from scratch and that's amazing for a street cart business. It guarantees that you get fresh pizza's but on the flip side, the waiting time can be around 20 minutes. I felt that that was worth the wait. 

Chicken Pepperoni Pizza (Regular) @ RM 12.90
Before speaking on the pizza's itself, I must say that I was very pleased with the pizza sizes. The small was slightly smaller than the personal pizza that you get at the famous chains. The regular was exactly the same and the family pizza was really huge. It was as big as the extra large that you get in those famous pizza chains. So, it's surely worth every penny. Coming back to their pizza, this Chicken Pepperoni Pizza looked and tasted really great. The ingredients were Chicken Pepperoni, Chicken chunks, Cheese, Pineapples, Onions, Mushrooms, Oregano and Capsicum, and it was so good. You could actually taste the chicken chunks and chicken pepperoni unlike the ones that you get at those big names. And look at the amount of cheese used, and this wasn't even the extra cheese version which is available as well. Extremely happy with this one and I would rate this at 9/10. 

Seafood Pizza (Regular) @ RM 11.90
Their Seafood Pizza was another extremely good one. The topping comprises of Tuna, Crabstick, Cheese, Pineapples, Onions, Mushrooms, Capsicum and Oregano. With each bite, you could taste a thick layer of tuna at the base. The crabstick and pineapples truly lifted the taste and that extra topping complimented so well with the base ingredients. Truly an awesome one and I would give this a 9/10. 

Chicken Pizza (Small) @ RM 5.90
Compared to the other two, this Chicken Pizza was a little more simple. Made with Chicken chunks, Pineapples, Onions, Mushrooms, Cheese, Capsicum and Oregano, this would be ideal for one who prefers a pizza that's a little less in calories. Despite being limited ingredients wise, it still did taste good and just like the earlier ones, you could actually taste the chicken meat. This, I would rate it at 8/10. 

Overall, I am very happy with this place. The pizza's were great, reasonably priced and they serve you with a smile. Now I understand why there is such a crowd at this stall. I am very certain that they would continue to maintain their standards and this I can see from the way they were operating. Every step was based on protocols and the training that they had been given. In a matter of months, I am sure that these guys would be doing very well. Keep up the great work guys!

Nasi Kandar Spices @ Hulu Bernam, Selangor

I was travelling back to Tanjung Malim from Penang and it was almost 9.30 pm. A rather long drive it was and I was starving. One option would be to head back into town which was another 10 minutes away or to have my dinner at the Ulu Bernam Rest Area. After some contemplation, I decided on the latter. My rational was solely based on my level of tiredness. If I was to head back into town, that's another distance that I would have to do and then come back all the way to get home. So, the rest area seemed like the best option as I was almost there. Being a place that is so familiar to me, I have tried the food at all the stalls there except for this one, Stall No. 10 which happens to be an Indian Muslim stall selling rice and curries and it goes by the name of Nasi Kandar Spices. 

My Meal @ RM 5.80
Choices were many and it seemed like it wasn't a great day for them business wise. This I am assuming based on the quantity that's still seen on the food counter. The staffs were Indonesians and they were not really familiar with the names of the dishes as I was mentioning to them. The reason for me to do so is because I am unable to get the food items myself and would have to point to them to get it for me. I believe this is done to control the quantity one takes. Good in a way when business is great, otherwise on a day like this, you would definitely get a lot of leftovers. What happens to those I don't really know. So, I had selected my food items and the total came to RM 8.95 . Paid for them and then off to have my meal. 

Fish Curry
Now, let's look at the dishes one by one. To start off, I had asked the waiter to make it 'banjir' and even then, this was the amount of Fish Curry that he had poured onto my plate. Well, initially I was furious but later on, and that is after tasting it, I was so thankful that he did just that. This was because the Fish Curry didn't taste like Fish Curry, instead it tasted so wierd that it seemed like some herbal medicinal soup that you'd get from those Chinese Medical Halls. Terrible it was and I had to take that whole lot of rice out and push it aside. As for this so called Fish Curry, I would give it a 1/10. Even their rice seemed so cold and dry like it was cooked some 18 hours ago and left in the fridge. Why can't they use rice warmers instead. That's something that would not cost them much. End of the day, if the food is good and served hot, business would only be better for them.  

Fried Egg
Their Fried Egg was nothing great as well. A very thin slice of egg it was. I guess the 50 cents coin would be thicker than this one. It may seem like a huge piece based on the area on the plate that it covers but you would not have had the satisfaction of having eaten an egg with this one. A waste of money and I would rate this at 2/10. 

Tempeh With Anchovies and Potatoes
Paper thin cuts of potatoes were fried with tempeh and anchovies in a somewhat sweet and spicy paste. This preparation was decent despite the fact that they have skimped on the ingredients. However, it did taste 'old'. Yes, it tasted like one that was prepared the day before, reheated and served again today. That was very noticeable especially with the tempeh and anchovies. Taste wise, I would give this a 4/10. 

Tofu Sambal
As for their Tofu Sambal, this was the hardest tofu that I have come across in my life. The outer layers were thick like a carton box, even the inside was terribly dry and the tofu had lost it's suppleness. Surely not yesterdays. Must be one from the day before yesterday. Yes, that was how horrible it was. And that so called sambal. Sigh. I don't even know where to start and where to end. Horrible is the word. This, deserves nothing but a 1/10. 

Pekedil Kentang
The Pekedil Kentang or Indonesian Style Potato Cutlet was the only one that tasted good. Not the best but it was way better than the rest. This was like sky high in taste compared to anything else that I have had at this stall. The ingredients were just perfect, fried to just the right level and it tasted just the way it should. Thus far, this is the only one that I would recommend at this stall and for this Pekedil, I would give it a 7/10. 

Ayam Masak Kicap @ RM 3.10
Their Ayam Masak Kicap was my worst nightmare. From outside the counter it looked good but when it was served, I had a shock. Just look at the amount of oil on that plate. And please do not be misguided by the size of that thing. There was literally nothing there meat wise. Just a large carcass with a very thin layer of meat that had shrunk due to being cooked multiple times. I am very certain that this was some other day's Fried Chicken that had been converted into this Ayam Masak Kicap and that conversion, wasn't something that happened overnight. It was after a few days that this happened. Not one that was edible and I would give this a 1/10. 

Overall, it was a massive mistake to have my meal at this stall and I am permanently blacklisting these guys. I will never ever come to this stall again. Looking at their prices, they are surely very reasonable and I think PLUS regulates them on an annual basis. My suggestion to PLUS, please also do an unscheduled taste test randomly every now and then you'd be able to improve the quality of your rest areas. This is the first time that I have left most of my food untouched as it was just not edible. Totally regret coming here and this would surely be my last.
