Nyok Lan Kajang Satay (Restoran Malaysia) @ Kajang, Selangor

Whenever we think of Satay, Satay Kajang will always be the first to pop up in our mind. There are many such establishments in Kajang and the most famous one being Satay Kajang Haji Samuri and in recent years, Willy Satay. However, there is another such establishment, Nyok Lan Kajang Satay, that has been around since 1971 and is also very famous among the locals. The first two are being run by Malay owners and this one, is run by a Chinese family.

Nyok Lan Kajang Satay (Restoran Malaysia)

An Old Signage Since The 70's

Indoor & Outdoor Seating

Clean And Mostly Crowded
Nyok Lan Kajang Satay a.k.a. Restoran Malaysia is located right in the middle of town, along Jalan Semenyih. Having been around since the 70's, the place seems to be extremely famous and was rather crowded when we arrived, and that too during a non peak hour. Owned by a Chinese family, most of their staffs were foreigners. Satay is the main dish here and they serve Chicken, Beef, Mutton and Fish Satay's. Previously, they used to have Duck Satay too but they have removed it from their menu. For those who are wondering if this is a Halal restaurant, I could not find any certification anywhere in the restaurant, Nevertheless, it is a Pork Free restaurant and there's a huge sign announcing that consumption of alcohol is prohibited in their premises. As far as the service goes, all their staffs were very efficient and seems to be well trained in handling crowd. Perhaps that's something that they're used to daily. The restaurant is open from 10.00 am till 9.00 pm daily and is closed every Tuesday.

Three Charcoal Stoves Used For Grilling Satay's

L - R: Chicken, Mutton and Fish Satay
Obviously the crowd here isn't as great as Haji Samuri or Willy Satay. Maybe, this is a place that is more famous with the non Malay's, just a guess though. And as such, they have three charcoal stoves used for the grilling of Satay's and this grilling is done outdoors. As I do not consume Beef, I stuck with Chicken, Mutton and some Fish Satay's. Do note that everything you see above are chargeable items. At the time of ordering, the waiter asked me if I want Onions and Cucumber. I did not understand the significance of that question at the time of ordering but understood it later when paying the bill. Onions are charged at RM 1.00 per portion and the sliced cucumbers were charged at RM 0.50 per portion. Nevertheless, for the price, the portions were good and they were very fresh indeed.

Chicken Satay @ RM 0.90 each

Mutton Satay @ RM 1.50 each

Fish Satay @ RM 1.50 each
Their Chicken Satay was very good. Comparing this to the ones that we get at Haji Samuri which is filled with fat, these were lean chunks of meat that were marinated in a not so sweet mixture and grilled to perfection. The size was just about right and it was so meaty and juicy. This I would rate at 9.5/10 . Their Mutton Satay too was good and surely better than most out there. These were not too stiff, just perfect and were so good to go on their own. Though a little pricey at RM 1.50 per skewer, they were worth it. I would rate their Mutton Satay at 9/10. Their Fish Satay however was nothing great and felt that it was just a namesake thing that they served. For RM 1.50 per skewer, it wasn't worth it. This Fish Satay I would rate at 3/10. I do see a lot of customers ordering their Beef Satay too. I assume that those must be pretty good too.

Peanut Sauce with Some Spicy Sambal

Mixed Up and It Was Delicious
Their Peanut Sauce was one that was on the lighter side and came with coarsely ground peanuts and a dash of some spicy Sambal. Stirred up, it was such a perfect dip. Neither too sweet nor spicy. Surely one of the best ones's in town. I loved it and would rate it at 9.5/10 .

Otak Otak Being Freshly Grilled

Otak Otak @ RM 0.90 each

One Of The Best That I Have Tried
Besides Satay, Otak Otak is another famous preparation here. Each is priced at RM 0.90 and one has to order a minimum of five pieces. This again was selling like hot cakes and it would be a sin if I were to miss this. Unlike the Satay and drinks where one would be paying at the counter, despite being owned by the same management (perhaps for Accounting and Taxation reasons) this you would need to pay to the waiter once the order is served. Gosh, this was heavenly. It tasted so good and that I ended up ordering another ten subsequently. One of the best Otak Otak that I have tried. So good and addictive. I would rate this at 10/10 . A must try here.

Our Bill For The Day
In summary, this place is surely one that I would recommend. Chicken Satay, Mutton Satay and their Otak Otak would be the one's that I would highly recommend. Excellent Satay and a good alternative to the famous ones in Kajang.
