Restoran Hou Hou Kee @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

This restaurant is the latest addition to the Chinese Food scene in Tanjung Malim. Previously they were located in the same residential estate but along the front row facing the main road. I have been to their old place sometime in March this year. That old premise was occupying two shop units and was slightly dull looking. When we tried their food then, some of the dishes were extremely good and some were extremely bad. I heard that they have moved to their new place now, I was informed that they have also changed the chefs and these are all highly paid seafood chefs which have been brought in from Kuala Lumpur. Well, everyone deserves a second chance and with that we decided on trying out this place for lunch today.

They have definitely invested a lot in their renovations and this place now looks simply superb. They now occupy four units of shop lots and one of it has been converted into their kitchen. There is also a stage with sound systems in place and this place now is also ideal for grand Chinese wedding dinners. As it was a Sunday, the place was crowded. It seems that they have managed to attract a huge number of locals, many of whom were loyal patrons of other restaurants in town. Despite the busy atmosphere, we were attended to promptly. It seems that two sisters were pretty much running the show here. They were the ones taking the orders from customers and they were definitely doing a good job of managing the place.

My Dad and His Chinese Tea

Coca Cola Pet Bottles @ RM 2.20
My Mom and Dad ordered Chinese Tea and it was provided complimentary. Good to see these kind of small things that are being done by the owners as it adds an extra touch which is not provided by anyone else in town. My brother and I went for the Coca Cola. They had these cute little bottles which was just slightly taller than the glass and they came at RM 2.20 each. The drinks were served promptly but then it was a slightly long wait for the food to arrive. I thoroughly understand as they had lots of customers to serve and it was not a problem at all.

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 7.00

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 7.00
The moment the first dish arrived, I could confirm that they had changed the chef as it used to be prepared differently the last time I was here. Today's Kangkung Belacan was very good. The leaves were fresh and they were not stingy with the amount of Belacan used. Definitely well prepared and I loved it. I would rate this dish at 9/10 . Besides the taste, the price is also the cheapest that I have seen in Tanjung Malim and the portion was lavish.

Greens with Garlic @ RM 7.00

Greens with Garlic @ RM 7.00
Another good dish here. The greens were very fresh and cooked just to the right level without having the juices to be sapped. The presentation was also perfect. Once again, this was a good dish and again, for the price of RM 7.00 , it is definitely very cheap. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

Butter Prawns @ RM 20.00

Butter Prawns @ RM 20.00
These Butter Prawns were awesome, simply fantastic. I admire their lavish usage of ingredients just to take the dish to the next level. The Butter has oozed well into the prawns making every bite a delight. Portion was also huge and I find the price to be very reasonable. Definitely a must try dish here and I would rate this at 9.5/10 .

Nyonya Style Steamed Fish @ RM 33.00

Nyonya Style Steamed Fish @ RM 33.00
We were recommended to try this dish by the lady boss and indeed it was a winner! The fish was a 1Kg fish which is relatively large and the gravy was just fantastic. Slightly spicy, it went perfectly well with the fish. In fact, after finishing the fish, we were scooping up the left over gravy as it was really good. I would not mind having just that gravy with some Man Tau Buns. I would rate this at 9.8/10 . A must try dish here!

The Bill
I find this restaurant to be very good. The food is delicious and the prices are cheap. Service was also very prompt and the place is very clean. They have definitely made a right move in changing their chefs and despite the grand renovations, they are not here to swindle customers by charging premium prices. If they maintain this way, I am sure they would top the list in Tanjung Malim soon.
