Ikan Bakar Ulu Bernam @ Hulu Bernam, Selangor

It has been some years that Tanjung Malim did not have a place selling Ikan Bakar until a few months ago, a new outlet opened up along Jalan Besar Ulu Bernam, parallel to Jalan Kilang Papan B. Fondly known as Ikan Bakar Ulu Bernam, this stall sells a number of different Ikan Bakar preparations. Besides this, they also serve a variety of noodles and fried rice.

Ikan Bakar Ulu Bernam in Tanjung Malim

Just a simple stall

Simple Layout
Built out of a simple wooden structure and plain cement flooring, this stall has gained popularity among the locals. On any day, there would be a decent amount of customers here and specifically on eve of Public Holidays and weekends, the place tends to get quite packed. Do note that there is no sign board or name at this restaurant but you should not miss it as it is exactly parallel to Jalan Kilang Papan B.

Ice Box with a number of fishes

Ikan Ayam...a weird looking fish

The Cook preparing the food
As you walk in, the kitchen is on the right and the cooks would be seen busy preparing the dishes. Just here, there is an ice box with a number of different fishes. You could choose the fish of your preference and according to the size required (based on the number of pax) and then specify the method of preparation that you would like. This stall specialises in the Nyonya style of preparation and he has a number of recipes according to that tradition. We placed our orders and besides the fish, we also ordered one noodle dish and one Fried Rice.

Waiting For Our Meal

Drinks Prepared On The Far Rear End

Coca Cola @ RM 2.00
The drinks are prepared at the far end of the restaurant. There isn't much of a choice here as far as drinks are concerned, just the usual Chinese Tea's and some can drinks. The service here is very prompt as within minutes of ordering, the drinks are already served.

Fried Rice @ RM 5.50

Closer Look At The Fried Rice
We ordered a plate of Fried Rice for one person which we shared among ourselves and it was priced at RM 5.50 which is the usual market price. Taste wise, it was just okay. The Fried Rice was quite dry and bland despite of having a number of ingredients added into it. There was a decent amount of Chinese Sausages in it and yet, it did not bring out the taste. I found this dish to be rather disappointing. My rating for this, is simply a 5.5 out of 10.

Hokkien Mee @ RM 5.50

Closer Look At The Hokkien Mee
For a single serving, the portion was huge. This definitely tasted very much better than the previous dish and in fact, I thought that their Hokkien Mee was quite good and it stood out really well. The flavours of the soy sauce and the springy noodles were a perfect combination. There was also a good amount of pork, fish paste and vegetables in the dish. Definitely a well prepared dish. I would rate this dish at 8.9/10 .

Portuguese Style Asam Grilled Fish @ RM 18.50

Quite a spicy dish
Packed in a foil, the Stingray was grilled according to the Portuguese Style Asam Fish. It was a spicy dish filled with Okra, Onions and loads of ground Chili Paste. It was slightly on the oily side and it would have been better if the amount of oil could have been minimised but the taste was good, though not the best that I have tried. For the portion size, I felt that their price is on the high side and I could get it much cheaper even in Kuala Lumpur. I would rate this dish at 7/10 .

Nyonya Style Grilled Fish @ RM 18.50

Spicy Chili Paste
This Stingray was prepared according to the Nyonya Style. This was more on the dry side with a dark thick layer of Chili paste on the fish and that was topped with Okra and diced Onions. This was just okay and once again, it was a tad too oily. The price again was a little high for the size of the fish. I would rate this dish at 6/10 .

Overall, I found their Grilled Fish to be just average or above average and nothing much to shout about. For someone who has a craving for Grilled Fish, then this place can be a nearby option, otherwise it is just another stall selling the above. Their Hokkien Mee however is worth mentioning here as it was quite good. I would come back for their Hokkien Mee but not for their Grilled Fish.
