Hock Kee Ulu Yam Loh Mee @ Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya

Restaurant Hock Kee Ulu Yam Loh Mee is located at the The Strand, Kota Damansara. It is located at the rear block and along the same stretch as the Nikon Academy and The Uma Balinese Restaurant.  I am not sure how this restaurant is connected to the one in Ulu Yam as that one is called Restaurant Hock Choon Kee but nevertheless, these guys offer the very same menu and at the same quality. Could be an initiative of the children and this is just a wild guess. As far as Hock Kee Ulu Yam Loh Mee is concerned, they have three outlets in the Klang Valley. The first one was opened in Bukit Tinggi Klang, the second one in Bandar Puchong Jaya and the latest one is this outlet in Kota Damansara.

Us at the Restaurant
We arrived here quite late today and it was about 9 pm and there were just a few other tables that were occupied. Well, this must be due to the fact that it was raining cats and dogs this evening. Since it was a cold night, we decided to sit outside instead of the air conditioned area.

The Menu
Their menu is a two sided laminated cardboard. What you see above is from both sides of the menu and their signature dishes are clearly marked. Do note that the portion sizes here are really huge. Even the noodle dishes which are supposed to be for one person, can be shared among three and is sufficient for a single serving.

Herbal Tea @ RM 1.50

Coca Cola @ RM 2.20

Warm Water @ RM 0.50
We ordered the above drinks. Warm Water is charged at 50 cents per glass which is quite fair and same goes to the Coca Cola. I had the Herbal Tea and it was quite nice. I would rate their Herbal Tea at 8.5/10 .

Ulu Yam Loh Mee @ RM 6.50
This dish was exactly like how it is served in Hock Choon Kee in Ulu Yam. The Noodles were springy, soft and wonderful, the broth was dark and thick and it came with loads of prawns, fried pork belly and fried lard. Taste wise, it was 100% identical. And as for the portion size, it as it was really huge and though this is meant to be for one person, we managed to share it among the four of us. The contents was able to fit into four small bowls perfectly. Definitely a well prepared dish and I enjoyed it very much. I would rate this dish at 9.8/10 .

Spicy Chee Cheong Fun @ RM 6.50

Closer Look At The Dish
The Spicy Chee Cheong Fun was also well prepared. For the price, once again the portion was huge. It came soggy with the right amount of sweet sauce and chili paste, all mixed up thoroughly. There were also traces of minced dried shrimps in the dish. Definitely a good preparation. I would rate this at 9.4/10 .

Special Stewed Pork Mee Hoon @ RM 8.00

Closer Look At The Dish
Although marked as a signature dish, to me this was just average. The real taste from the dish came from the Pork Belly. The noodles, when consumed without the meat, tasted rather bland and flat. It also had some fried lard and vegetables in the dish but once again, it was way too oily. None of us enjoyed this dish. I would only rate it at 5/10 .

Exciting Pepper Mee Hoon Soup @ RM 6.50
This dish was way better then the previous one. It had a decent amount of Pepper in it but I felt that there should have been more soup provided for the amount of noodles given. Chunks of Pork were added to the dish too but once again, the amount was limited. It would have been better if there was more pepper, more pork and more soup or lesser noodles. I would rate this dish at 8/10 .

Fried Fish Cake @ RM 9.00

Sweet and Spicy Dip Sauce
Another specialty dish at Hock Chook Kee in Ulu Yam is the above Fried Fish Cake and they had the same here. This was really delicious. The skin was thin and lovely and the fish cake itself was very soft, fluffy, fresh and delicious. This dish comes with a sweet and spicy dip sauce on the side but honestly, you can even have it on it's own and it would be equally delicious. I would rate this at 10/10 .

Although the name varies a little between this one and the one back in Ulu Yam, the dishes are identical both in offering as well as taste. The prices are fairly decent and the portions are mega huge. I did observe some of those tables that had ordered the medium sized ones and they seemed like they were good to feed a family of five. Definitely a place worth returning.

我是甲洞三宝寺 (暹廟) SAMNAK SAMBODHI BUDDHIST ASSOCIATION NO: 19-21 JALAN 38 TAMAN DESA JAYA KEPONG 52100 KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA.
