Hou Xiang Chee Cheong Fun @ Bandar Sri Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Restaurant Hou Xiang Chee Cheong Fun is a relatively new addition to Bandar Sri Damansara. Having started their business some time in May or June this year, they specialise in Chee Cheong Fun while having a number of variety of Chee Cheong Fun preparations from around the country. I have been to this restaurant sometime in mid September and having been very satisfied with their food, we decided to return tonight.

This restaurant is located along the same row as the famous Restaurant Thai Base, which is the row of shops that is right behind RHB Bank in Bandar Sri Damansara. We were here at 6.45 pm for an early dinner and even then, there were already a number of tables that were occupied and by 7.15 pm, they were almost full house. The restaurant has a beautiful design and I really liked the decor. There is a bar styled station that is built in the center of the restaurant which is where all the food and drinks are prepared. Service here was a breeze and everyone seemed to be very efficient. As customers walked in, there was a gentleman who was greeting them and I supposed that that must be the owner of the restaurant.

Food Order Chit
They had seven different variety of Chee Cheong Fun in their menu. Besides that, they also offered some Yong Tau Foo which also seemed like a favourite here as I did see a number of people ordering them. Their deserts also seemed good and they have a number of ABC's, Ais Kacang, Cendol and others. Ordering here is quite simple as all the dishes have a particular code number and an ordering chit is provided along with the menu. You would have to fill the code numbers in the chit and then hand them over to any one of the waitress.

Summary of Orders

Cutlery & Sauces

Lovely Enamel Plates
The plates and mugs used were very interesting. It used to be the ones that was commonly found in the 60's and 70's and I wonder where they got their supply of these utensils. Must be from Thailand as it is quite difficult to find them in Kuala Lumpur. You would have also noticed the Order Summary that was placed on the table. Once the orders are firmed up, the waiter then keys them in at the cashier and I believe it must be electronically transmitted to the kitchen. Then a summary of the orders is placed at the table and as and when the dishes are delivered, they are crossed off.

Lemon Cola @ RM 4.40

Closer Look at the Lemon
This was an interesting drink. It is Coca Cola with thick slices of Lemon. This gives it a very sour and fizzy taste to it. Weird initially, but then when I got used to it, it was rather nice. I would rate this drink at 8.5/10 .

Longan @ RM 5.30
The Iced Longan was definitely nice and lightly sweetened. I would rate that drink at 9/10 . You might be wondering why it is only half full. Well, when we ordered we requested for less ice and they still sent it with loads of ice. We called the waiter and asked him to remove the ice and when he brought back the mug, that was all that was left of it.

Taiwanese Sausage @ RM 4.80
The Taiwanese Sausage was quite good. Being a lover of sausages, I felt that it was fried to the right level and had a pretty good taste to it. I was expecting the spicy type but this was not that spicy. Nevertheless, it was nice. I would rate this at 8.8/10 .

Fried Shui Kau @ RM 3.80
The Fried Shui Kau dish was nice but I felt that the filling was insufficient. For two pieces, it was priced at RM 3.80 which I felt was too expensive for this dish. I would rate this dish at 7/10 .

Curry Chee Cheong Fun @ RM 5.20
This dish was very good, in fact one of the best that I have tried. The curry had great flavour to it and had very minimal oil. The portion size was also fairly good for the price paid. I would rate this dish at a perfect 10/10 .

Chicken Glutinous Rice @ RM 4.80
The above dish was another one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Unlike other places which only adds Chicken, here you are able to find a few slices of Chinese Sausages also added to it. Taste wise, it was very good and I have never seen this dish prepared with so little oil. This literally seemed to make Loh Mai Kai almost an oil free dish. Excellent preparation and it deserves a rating of 10/10 .

Mixed Yong Tau Foo
The above Mixed Yong Tau Foo dish was based on the individual items that I have chosen earlier. They were White Fish Balls (RM 2.80 for 2 pieces), Fu Chok (RM 1.60 per piece) , Stuffed Tofu (RM 1.70), Stuffed Bitter Gourd (1.70), Stuffed Okra (RM 1.70) and Stuffed Chili (RM 1.70) . To me, their items were just decent and they were nothing to shout about. In fact, I feel that they are overpriced. They were also served with some soup that was rather tasteless and it is a must to have this dish with sauces or else they taste quite bland. Overall, I would rate this dish at 6/10 .

On the whole, except for the Yong Tau Foo dish, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here and I find all their dishes to be good so much so, almost everything that I tried scored a good score from me. Their service is efficient, food is good and the price is very reasonable for most of their dishes and what more would I want from a restaurant. Definitely a highly recommended restaurant for Chee Cheong Fun.
