Pei Fook Special Wantan Mee @ Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya

Restaurant Pei Fook Special Wantan Mee is located in a number of places in the northern side of Kuala Lumpur. Having originated in Kepong, today they have a few other branches in nearby locations. I am visiting their branch which is located at The Strand, Kota Damansara today. I have read a lot of mixed reviews about this place, some even very hilarious ones which condemn this restaurant but looking at their popularity over the years, there surely has got to be something right with this restaurant and with that self made conviction in mind, I wanted to try their food myself to be able to judge.

Restaurant Pei Fook Special Wantan Mee in Kota Damansara

Interior of the restaurant

Interior of the restaurant
This restaurant is located on the second row of shops in The Strand, Kota Damansara and as always, parking here can be very difficult. The restaurant has a very standard layout with seating both on the inside as well as outside along the corridors for smokers. When I arrived here today, it was past lunch hours and there was not much crowd. There were just three other tables that were occupied. I took my place inside and waited for them to attend to me. The owner, which seemed like an elderly gentleman, was sitting right in front of me and he refused to attend to me and continued talking to another guest in the restaurant. Having lost my patience after waiting for almost 20 minutes, I walked in to the kitchen as asked them if they were still open or if they practice a self ordering system because I have been waiting for 20 minutes and no one had attended to me despite me trying to wave at them a number of times. I guess, throwing a fork at the glass panels would have done the trick. Then a foreigner came out of the kitchen after the lady boss told him to attend to me. He then handed me the menu. I don't understand why it was so difficult for them to come take the orders without having got to aggravate their customers. Maybe, business is too good for them, I am not sure but from reading the blogs out there, there seemed to be more disgruntled customers than those that gave a positive review.

The Menu

The Menu

The Menu
The above is their full menu and they offer a number of different noodles and preparation methods. As they claim to be specialists in Wantan Mee, I decided to stick to that with a side dish and a soup. It was a fairly quick selection and then the waiter went into the kitchen and started preparing my meal.

Cham @ RM 1.80
The above drink is called Cham, for those who do not know, it is a mixture of coffee and tea. In my opinion, there was more coffee in it than tea and it was too sweet and bitter for me. I would only rate it at 6/10 .

Dry Wantan Mee (Small) @ RM 5.40
I ordered the smaller portion of the Dry Wantan Mee. The Big looked really big as it was really loaded with Noodles. Even in this dish, there were no Char Siew or steamed Wantans added. It was plain Noodles and a few pieces of the vegetable. To me, the noodles were nice though they did not taste like the ones commonly found. It seemed like a fusion noodles but it was nice. The sauce however was again sweet which was not to my liking. I felt a little disappointed with this dish as the core of Wantan Noodles is the sauce and if the sauce is off, it can spoil the dish. I would only rate this dish at 6/10 . Nothing great!!!

Wantan Soup @ RM 2.50
This again is the smaller portion of the Wantan Soup. The soup was dark in colour and not clear like how it usually is. First taste of the soup, it was sweet again. I wonder what it is with these guys and sweetness. They must have added some of the Sweet Soy Sauce to this which explains the taste and colour. The other thing that I found in their soup was Fried Lard. This is something unique that I have not seen elsewhere which is good. As for the soup, I would only rate it at 4/10 . Coming to the Steamed Wantan's in the soup, they were really small in fact the sliced green chili equaled in diameter to it. But, there were ten pieces in this small bowl and the meat wise, it was very nice. I enjoyed the Steamed Wantan's but not the soup and that is why I am giving them separate rating's. I would rate the Steamed Wantan's at 8.5/10 .

Honey BBQ Char Siew @ RM 7.00
The above dish was the worst Char Siew I have ever tried in my life. It was way too sweet and the meat was really horrible. Does not deserved to be called Char Siew at all. I am yet to try a place that serves worst ones than this. I would rate this at 1/10 .

The Branches
In a nutshell, I most likely would not be a returning customer and having experienced the food and service myself, I now know why bloggers go through the pain of blogging about this place, it is clearly to forewarn others but once again, taste is a matter of personal preference and they do have their own group of loyal customers who find the food here to be good. But service, is a common thing and what happened to me today was just not acceptable. As for me, it's a clear no and I am not alone in saying this as all the reviews on Foursquare also points to the same. Do also not that despite their opening hours published says that they open from 7 am until 5pm daily, they only open at 7.30 am and by 4 pm, they do not accept anymore customers. Even when I was here today, at 3.45 pm, they had turned away a number of customers.
