Mama Fat's Restaurant @ Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur

Mama Fat's Restaurant is a family friendly restaurant that is located in Desa Sri Hartamas which specialises in Nyonya and Portuguese cuisines. The founder Mervin Theseira holds this restaurant as a tribute to three Malaccan matriarchs who are close to his heart. They are his mother, grandmother and mother in law and it is their Nyonya and Portuguese recipes that have encouraged him to start this business. I am pleased that I had an opportunity to meet him in person despite being very busy in the kitchen. He personally handles all the cooking himself in ensuring that customers get the best.

When I arrived here, it was way off usual lunch hours and yet the place had a number of customers. The place is run by family members while Mervin is busy in the kitchen. I must say that this place is very family friendly and you would feel the warm welcome the moment you walk in to the restaurant. Everyone is attentive to your needs and thus never was a moment for me when I felt ignored or awkward.

The Menu
The above is their entire menu. They are packed with a whole load of dishes, many of which are my favourites. Unfortunately, I am alone here today and there is only a limit as to what I can try. The prices too are very reasonable for Kuala Lumpur and do not differ much compared to what the Nyonya restaurants in Malacca charge.

Hot Tea @ RM 4.50
I ordered the above Hot Tea. They usually serves their Coffee and Tea black but you could request for Fresh Milk to be provided without any additional charges.

White Rice @ RM 1.80

Prawn Petai Sambal @ RM 22.50
The Prawn Petai Sambal was definitely very good. It was rich with spices and was slightly on the spicy side but for me, it was well within tolerable level. For the price, you get a decent amount of prawns and loads of Petai. I loved the way it was cooked and they had ensured that the gravy seeped in well into the prawns. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish at would rate it at 10/10 .

Kangkung Belacan @ RM 8.50
I was initially expecting their Kangkung Belacan to imitate the Chinese style but once the dish was served, it took me by surprise. The preparation was authentic Nyonya style and not many places, even in Malacca still serve it this way. The dish was packed with dried shrimps and home made sambal and it was full of various flavours. Every bite of this vegetable definitely struck various notes on my palate. A great dish!!! I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

Chicken Pongteh Kampung Belimbing @ RM 15.90
Chicken Pongteh is my all time favourite Nyonya dish and as such, I am always very fussy when it comes to this dish as I expect the best. Just like the others dishes, this restaurant did not fail to impress me with this dish too. This is the smaller portion and they have two portion sizes available. Although this is usually sufficient for two, I ended up finishing the whole dish by myself and even the base gravy was swept dry by the time I was finished. In a word, this dish was heavenly!!! I would rate it 10/10 .

Based on the dishes that I had tried today, this place serves fantastic Nyonya food but I was sad to learn that they would cease retail operations as of the 30th of September 2013 and would then concentrate on their catering business. They would be willing to do even small  catering as well as have the capacity to cook for huge functions and I would strongly recommend them as I have full confidence in Mervin and his cooking. If you happen to be located nearby, do not miss the opportunity to visit this place before the end of this month.
