Hakka Rang Restaurant @ Dataran Sunway, Petaling Jaya

Today my parents were in town visiting me and as I was thinking of a place to take them for dinner, I remembered this restaurant that I had longed to go in a while but never had the chance. Today would also be appropriate for this as there are more of us and that gives us an opportunity to taste more dishes. With the choice of restaurant being settled, we drove to Dataran Sunway in Kota Damansara to this place called Hakka Rang Restaurant. As always, driving on the inside roads of Dataran Sunway is a craze but it was much better compared to other days, perhaps many have started returning to their home towns to celebrate the Chinese New Year with their loved ones.

Hakka Rang Restaurant in Dataran Sunway
Luckily we got a place to park not very far from the restaurant as it was already raining in this area. This restaurant is pretty easy to find as it is located in the row of shops facing The Strand.

The restaurant
The restaurant occupies a single shop lot and is simple in its setting. When we arrived, it was quite packed. The above photo was taken when we were leaving as you may wonder why my words contradict with the above photo. The restaurant is split into two sections, smoking and non smoking.

The Menu

The Menu
We took our seats and was immediately attended to by a gentleman who seemed like the owner. I was going through the menu and they surely have quite a number of dishes that they offer. Most are standard portions and some come in two portion sizes. Having gone through the menu, we placed our orders and it all happened pretty speedily. The owner was all the time by our side making recommendations to the dishes and portion sizes and that was very nice of him.

Hakka Stuffed Bean Curd Balls @ RM 12.00
Just after the drinks, the above dish was the first to arrive. These were surely home made as I saw them making these at one of the tables. The Bean Curd Balls were surely good and they had a lovely taste to it. The soup was lovely too and most of us kept drinking it even after the Bean Curd Balls were done with. I would rate this dish 8/10 .

Fried Egg with Pickled Vegetable and Preserved Sausage @ RM 9.80
This egg was only average as we could not really taste much of the fillings which is the Pickled Vegetables and the Sausages. I would surely expect the fillings to be really fillings instead of garnishing. I would rate this dish at 5/10 .

Hakka Rang Salted Chicken @ RM 17.80

The Accompanying Garlic Paste
Now, this was a wonderfully done dish. I enjoyed every bit of it. The serving size was that of a quarter chicken and it was so tender and juicy. Absolutely recommended dish! I would rate this 9/10 .

Pork Belly with Yam @ RM 22.80
Another lovely dish at this restaurant. It was heavenly. The Pork Belly and the Yam were perfectly done. I would rate this dish 10/10 . Highly recommended!!!

Steamed Grouper Fish with Homemade Sauce @ RM 35.80
This is another amazing dish at this restaurant and it comes listed among their favorites. Absolutely delicious. Everyone of us enjoyed this dish thoroughly. The sauce was lovely and it was steamed in the right manner with the juices still locked in. You do not get this kind of quality steamed fish in many restaurants anymore. However, as the fish used was Grouper, it was a little pricey. Leaving the price aside and just considering the taste, it surely deserves a rating of 10/10 .

Mom and Angie at Dinner
On the whole, the bill for the day came to RM 118.65 which includes the drinks which was a pot of Green Tea and four plates of White Rice. I deem the price to be alright and the food here generally good. The above dishes was surely just nice for the four of us and it was not too much to order. Another point to mention here is that the owner came back to our table at the end of the dinner and wanted our feedback on the food which I feel is great customer service. If you are looking for good Hakka food, this is surely a place that you should be heading to.

  1. Food looks good.I wanted to ask, is there any spicy dishes in Hakka style cooking?

    1. I doubt Denise. Seems like they use a lot of sauces for their cooking but I still do love this style. Guess what, despite my mixed reviews about this very popular restaurant (they are now mega big these days), the owner actuators published my reviews on their website and thanked me for the honest feedback with promise to improve. I was touched by that. It takes a real man to do that.
