Big Brother Restaurant & Grill @ The Strand, Petaling Jaya

Having decided to have Western Food, we ventured into Dataran Sunway to this place called Big Brother Restaurant & Grill. To be precise, this restaurant is located at The Strand. It has been around for quite a while now and is very famous for two reasons. Firstly the huge portions and secondly, for it's Halal Status.

Big Brother Restaurant & Grill
Having arrived at this restaurant, we headed in to get our table. It was quite busy even post dinner time.

There was an incessant flow of customers coming in to the restaurant throughout the time we were there. The set up with quite standard for a diner and it was split into two sections, one for non smokers inside and a few tables outside for smokers. The moment we took our seats, we were attended to by a waitress. It took us a while to go through the menu as they really had a huge offering. Another point to note that made this restaurant famous is the endorsement by the Jalan Jalan Cari Makan team. Having gone through the menu, we then called the waitress again and placed our orders.

Peach Tea @ RM 6.50

Pineapple Tea @ RM 6.50
The first to arrive was the above drinks. These were good and they adhered to our request by having minimal ice. Both these teas had real fruit chunks inside them and thats an upside. We also ordered two glasses of warm water and they were charged at RM 0.50 each.

Garlic Bread @ RM 5.90
The first dish that arrived was the Garlic Bread. This was really good and I loved the crisp yet mouth watering taste. Really fantastic. I would rate this at 9/10 . A must try dish here.

Grilled Lamb Chop @ RM 20.90
Okay, now for this dish, the portion was really huge. There were two massive chunks of meat placed above one another with mashed potato right at the bottom. The Mashed Potato was surely home made and not the powdered stuff. The vegetable side dish was pretty good too and there was a trace of honey in it. As for the lamb, though the size was really huge, it did not have the uumph that should be there. It was quite bland and flat. It surely can be made very much better than this. I would rate this 5/10 only.

Big Brother Special French Fries @ RM 9.90

Big Brother Special French Fries @ RM 9.90
This is a signature dish here and I would recommend to try this. It is French Fries fried and baked with Cheese. Don't let this dish to cool down or try to eat it when it has cooled down as the taste is only intact when it is still hot. When cold, the cheese combination does not work quite well. I would rate this 7/10 and it is worth trying.

Pan Seared Salmon @ RM 25.90

Pan Seared Salmon @ RM 25.90

This is by far the best dish that I has tasted in the restaurant. The Salmon was excellently done and the sauce was just absolutely delicious. A very good dish at this restaurant. I would rate this 9.5/10 . Must try dish here!

Grilled Chicken Chop @ RM 15.90
This dish was just average. They have the option of having it in either Mushroom Sauce or Black Pepper Sauce. It is just a slice of chicken laid above some mashed potato. Taste was flat to me. I would only rate this 5/10 .

Grilled Whole Chicken Leg @ RM 17.90
Once again, this dish was quite disappointing as well. I was expecting much more out of this dish. It was not bad but wasn't great either. Flat taste and deserves a mere 5/10 rating.

Parents Having Dinner
On the whole, this restaurant has its advantages and disadvantages. Some dishes are pretty good and some are just average. However, portion sizes are surely huge and prices and decent. If you are limited to dining at Halal restaurants, then this would be ideal. Service level is a little slow and has got to improve as well. I had some issues with the Credit Card as the guy operating it which seemed like a foreigner did not know how to operate it rightly. Our bill for the day came up to RM 121.45, including taxes which was decent for four pax.

  1. Cheesy fries...OMG! so yummy looking! Usually cheese baked dishes are best eaten as hot as possible! they won't have an OOMPH factor when they are cold.

    1. You're absolutely right Denise. They were good but their Pan Seared Salmon was awesome. Honestly ive tasted better food but not better Halal certified food. That's their plus point indeed.
